Books first. Then food. Then clothes.

New Orleans

I would write a poem for New Orleans. But I’d feel like that would be selling out. Letting details slip away as words do.   I would write a poem for New Orleans. A poem of destruction and rebirth but I can’t find words.   I would write a poem for New Orleans. Of drunken [...]

An Old Poem

I feel like I should be writing y’all a book review…or a funny interview…or something. But, I was reading my idea journal just now, because I had a story idea (that I quickly realized people would either call “The Matrix” or “Inception” on!) and wanted to write it down. But, I was reading it, and, [...]

Listen

Listen, souls are whispering. Listen, secrets are sharing. Listen because the world is wider than the length of your nose. Listen, do you know your friends? Listen, do you know yourself? Listen, can you hear fears in hearts screaming? Listen, can you hear souls swelling? I did. Today. I took time to listenĀ  to a [...]

A Haiku For Mommy, in all her Sanity

I think Mommy took yesterday’s post differently than it was meant. Denise is like Buffy: when she leaves the Hell-mouth goes crazy active, by no fault of Willow’s or Xander’s or Angel’s. It just happens. So here’s a haiku: No tampons are thrown No pea soup, no spinning heads Everything is sane.

A Haiku For Denise in California

I wrote this poem because I realized that, however ept Mommy may be, Denise tempers our insanity to seem less insane, if that makes any sense. So, here’s a haiku: When Denise is gone The world is much crazier. We need sanity!

Poetry

My teacher wants us to write a poem. Not hard. She wants it to be about the negative effects of racial prejudice on our lives. Harder. I just don’t notice things like that. But doable. She wants us to write it in the style of a specific poem. Same format. Same number of lines. Same [...]

Poems About Being an Ambassador at Freshman Orientation

I spent six hours today helping incoming Freshmen and their families around the school (good community service hours!) during which time I wrote haikus to stave off the crazies which occur as a combination of loudness and being hungry. They go as follows: Loud, angry woman Hasn’t registered. No packet. She needs to chill out. [...]

Liz’s Haikus

My brilliant sister actually is a poet! She rocks! Here is her best haiku: I have a sister My sister is weirdliful She is disturbing Isn’t she just darling? Just because she’s referring to me doesn’t make her any less creative. She even made up the word “weirdliful”! She should get her own blog when [...]
