Tithe: a book review that doesn’t even begin to do it justice

Tithe by Holly Black. How to explain it in terms that will somehow show just what an awesome book it is? I could write a love song; no, I can’t rhyme. Perhaps a poem then, after I’ve explained the basic elements. The protagonist is a teenage girl named Kaye who lives with her mother and grandmother. She’s always been a little different, playing with faeries while other girls play with dolls. She’s about to find out that not all faeries are as nice as the ones she used to play with. She has a plethora of bad habits, but that is irrelevant. Obviously, from the element of faeries, it’s a fantasy book, but it, in the parts that aren’t faerie-oriented, symbolizes real American culture better than most realistic fiction books I’ve read.

Holly Black doesn’t cut corners to make things predictable and comforting, rather the opposite, in fact. This is truly amazing in modern novels, because often when you say to yourself “She’s going to be all right; no thing’s going to happen.” , it’s a safe assumption. Not so with these books. Along with the plot, the writing style is phenomenal. Holly Black, through her writing, and the insights of her characters, has truly altered my views of some very basic things, like sunsets.

I would give this book a 9.5 on the scale, simply because I’m stubborn, and because, like when someone is looking for true love, I’m waiting for “the one”. Though this book is nibbling on Prince Charming’s heels.

As for the poem, I’m not really a poet, but I write fairly good haikus.

Faeries, demons, queens

This book has it all, it seems

It surpasses words

See, not really a poet, but I try my best, right?

The moral to this story is… when mommy & Denise recommend a book, you should read it. ;-)

I also loved Tithe. Also loved Ironside. Did not love Valiant. I also enjoyed her new graphic novel… you read that right?
